Photo Essay: Atlas Mountains and Berber life
by Adam Axon on February 11, 2010
The Atlas Mountains offer a great example of Moroccan countryside and traditional Berber lifestyles. Hiking through the mountains and having lunch with Berber villages ranks right up with my top experiences from my four month trip. I hope the photo essay below gives you a little bit of an insight into what my day was like!
1. Amizmiz at the base of the Atlas Mountains
2. I'd hike up to those Mountains!
3. Inside our very first Berber Village
4. This youngster was wary of strangers!
5. Traditional farming techniques. The donkey is an integral part of village life
6. Up and up and up. Sigh
7. The snowy peaks of the Atlas Mountains
8. The view from the top! I started all the way down there
9. Tizgui. The traditional Berber Village
10. Said. Our tour guide from Berber Adventures
11. Mohammed, our host for lunch. He was very accommodating!
12. Even Berber villagers eat infront of the TV
13. The Berber children wishing us a warm goodbye!

I’m always in awe of these traditional towns! I also find it strange that they have such traditional lives, but wear such modern looking clothes!
That totally blew me away to be honest. I walk in to Mohammed’s house and he has a satellite box, dvd player and a tele. I wasn’t even expecting them to have power!
It’s great how travel can blow away our misconceptions.
